Shield AI
Shield AI is a San Diego defense technology company building autonomous flight software for military aircraft. Its core product, Hivemind, is an AI pilot intended to let aircraft operate where GPS and communications links are jammed or unavailable — the conditions that define modern electronic warfare. The company also builds aircraft of its own: the V-BAT tactical drone, which came with its 2021 acquisition of Martin UAV, and the larger X-BAT.
Key Products
Hivemind — Autonomy software that flies aircraft without GPS or a data link. Shield AI has demonstrated it on uncrewed platforms and on an F-16 through DARPA’s autonomous air combat work.
V-BAT — Vertical takeoff fixed-wing tactical drone, used from ships and from land. Shield AI both sells the aircraft and operates it under contract for customers, with reported order sizes ranging from a handful of aircraft to several hundred. The company says V-BATs deployed in Ukraine through 2025 flew more than 35 missions and identified over 200 Russian targets; those are company figures.
X-BAT — Autonomous VTOL fighter announced in October 2025, roughly 26 feet long with a 39-foot wingspan. Shield AI has said full mission-capability testing is expected in 2028. That is a company target, not a demonstrated capability.
Business and Funding
Shield AI is private. In March 2026 it announced a raise of $2 billion at a $12.7 billion post-money valuation, made up of a $1.5 billion Series G and $500 million of fixed-return preferred equity. The Series G was led by Advent International and co-led by JPMorganChase’s Security and Resiliency Initiative, with Blackstone providing the preferred equity alongside a delayed-draw facility. Shield AI announced the acquisition of the simulation software company Aechelon at the same time.
That valuation is roughly five times the approximately $2.7 billion the company was valued at in its 2023 round. Revenue is not publicly disclosed.
Why It Matters
Shield AI’s bet is that autonomy is the durable product and the airframe is the commodity. Selling software that can fly platforms it did not build — including crewed aircraft — is a fundamentally different position from the hardware-first drone makers it is usually grouped with.
X-BAT is where that bet gets tested and where the risk sits. A VTOL fighter is a far more ambitious programme than a tactical ISR drone, the testing milestone is years out, and the reported unit price puts it in a class where it competes for budget against crewed aircraft and established collaborative combat aircraft programmes. The 2026 valuation prices in success on that programme, not on V-BAT alone.
