6K Energy
6K Energy is a US battery materials company focused on domestic production of cathode active materials. Its relevance to the drone and defense market comes from the growing need to localize battery supply chains as NDAA restrictions tighten around foreign entities of concern.
Key Products
Single-crystal NMC811 cathode material - A nickel-cobalt-manganese chemistry designed to prioritize energy density.
Domestic cathode active materials production - US-based battery material manufacturing intended to serve mobility and defense applications, built on the company’s UniMelt microwave plasma process, which it says eliminates hazardous waste and uses roughly 90 percent less water than conventional cathode production.
Business and Funding
6K Energy signed a seven-year supply agreement with CRG Defense to provide domestic cathode active materials from its North Andover, Massachusetts facility.
Its larger bet is PlusCAM, a 160,000-square-foot cathode active material plant in Jackson, Tennessee, expected to employ around 230 people at full capacity and to produce both NMC and LFP chemistries. The US Department of Energy executed a $50 million grant toward the facility, part of a construction cost the company has put at more than $200 million. The plant was originally scheduled to open in late 2024; it is now expected to come online in early 2028.
Why It Matters
Battery materials are one of the least visible but most strategic parts of the drone supply chain. If US defense procurement is going to decouple from Chinese battery inputs, companies like 6K Energy are part of the infrastructure that makes that possible.
