Skydio

Skydio is a California company that develops autonomous drone platforms for infrastructure inspection, public safety and defense. Its aircraft use onboard AI for obstacle avoidance and autonomous flight, which reduces how much piloting skill an operator needs. Skydio products are manufactured in the United States and are NDAA compliant, giving the company access to US government and military procurement from which DJI is excluded.

Business and Funding

Skydio is private. It raised a $230 million Series E in February 2023 at a valuation above $2.2 billion, which the company said brought its total funding to $562 million. In April 2026 it raised a $110 million Series F at a $4.4 billion valuation, led by existing investors. Chief executive Adam Bry framed the small size of that round as the point, saying the company has a core business generating hundreds of millions in annual revenue that increasingly funds its own operations. That is a company statement; Skydio is private and does not publish audited financials.

Two events shaped the current company. In August 2023 Skydio exited the consumer drone market entirely, discontinuing its Skydio 2 and 2+ consumer kits to concentrate on enterprise, public safety and defense customers. In late 2024 China imposed sanctions on Skydio, which disrupted its access to batteries and forced the company to re-source that part of its supply chain.

Why It Matters

Skydio is the most credible US-made alternative to DJI for enterprise and government buyers. NDAA compliance and Blue UAS clearance make it a default option for federal agencies, law enforcement and military units barred from Chinese platforms, and that regulatory position strengthens as NDAA enforcement tightens.

The Chinese sanctions episode is the more revealing part of the story. Being a US manufacturer did not make Skydio independent of Chinese supply chains — it took a targeted sanction on a single component category to disrupt production. That is the real test facing every Western drone maker claiming supply-chain independence, and it is a better measure of resilience than the compliance label is.
