Archer and Joby: Who Gets FAA Certification First in 2026?

Archer Aviation and Joby Aviation are both targeting FAA type certification in 2026. Here's where each program stands and what's left to clear.

Archer Aviation has cleared a critical regulatory hurdle — the FAA has accepted 100% of its Means of Compliance documentation for the Midnight aircraft, opening the path to physical certification testing and keeping the company’s Q3 2026 Abu Dhabi commercial launch on track. The milestone arrives as Joby Aviation prepares to begin commercial passenger flights in Dubai within weeks, marking Q2 2026 as the moment the eVTOL sector’s long certification slog starts converting into actual operations.

The two developments are related but distinct. Archer’s MoC acceptance means the FAA has agreed on how the Midnight will demonstrate compliance with airworthiness standards — physical testing can now begin against those agreed parameters. Joby is further along, currently in Stage 5 type inspection authorization testing with the FAA, with its first FAA-conforming aircraft completing flight testing in March.

What the Joby Dubai Launch Actually Involves

Joby’s Dubai service is the furthest advanced commercial eVTOL operation in a Western-regulated market. All four vertiport locations are built and equipped. Uber app integration is confirmed for booking. A pilot training program is underway. The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority’s six-year exclusive partnership provides the regulatory framework on the ground.

This will be the first time passengers in a market with Western-style aviation regulation can book and fly an electric air taxi as a routine service — not a demonstration, not a media flight, a bookable product. EHang holds that distinction in China, where the CAAC-certified EH216-S is already carrying paying passengers at tourism sites across Guangdong, Hefei, and Shenzhen, with plans to expand to 100-plus operating sites across China by end of 2026. Dubai would be the first equivalent outside Chinese airspace.

Where Every Major Program Stands

The certification race as of April 2026:

EHang EH216-S — CAAC certified, commercial operations running now across multiple Chinese cities. Two-passenger capacity, 22-mile range.

Joby S4 — FAA Stage 5, TIA testing underway. Commercial target Q2 2026 in Dubai.

Archer Midnight — FAA Means of Compliance 100% accepted, moving to physical testing. Commercial target Q3 2026 in Abu Dhabi. Manufacturing partner Stellantis is ramping production capability.

Eve Air Mobility — FAA and ANAC certification in progress. Commercial target 2026–2027.

BETA Technologies ALIA CX300 — FAA certification targeting 2026, commercial operations 2026–2027.

Wisk Gen 6 — pursuing autonomous certification pathway. Commercial target 2028.

Vertical Aerospace VX4 — EASA and UK CAA certification in progress. Commercial target 2028.

The Infrastructure Is No Longer Theoretical

Vertiport construction has moved from planning documents to concrete. Dubai has four operational locations ready for Q2 launch. Abu Dhabi has four under construction targeting Q3. Singapore’s Changi hub is confirmed for 2027. London is planning Heathrow and City Airport corridors for 2028. New York has JFK and Manhattan sites under review for 2027.

The infrastructure bottleneck was always cited as the reason commercial eVTOL couldn’t scale even after certification. The current construction pace suggests that argument has a limited shelf life. Whether the certification timelines above hold — and whether Joby’s Dubai launch converts from imminent to actual without further delay — will determine how much of that infrastructure has aircraft to serve when it opens.

The next 90 days will produce more real-world eVTOL operational data than the previous five years combined.
