Anduril Industries has received a $100.3 million increase to an existing Pentagon contract to upgrade the Space Surveillance Network, the global system of sensors and radar stations the US military uses to track satellites, space debris, and potential threats in orbit. The modification brings the total contract ceiling above $200 million, with a September 2027 completion target.
The upgrade centers on a mesh networking architecture for the SSN — a design that allows space-based sensors to communicate across multiple redundant routes rather than through centralized nodes. Eliminating single points of failure matters in contested environments where an adversary could attempt to degrade tracking capability by targeting specific sensors or communications links.
Why the Space Surveillance Network needs this now
The SSN’s core function is situational awareness in orbit: knowing where everything is, who put it there, and whether it poses a threat. That task is getting harder. The number of tracked objects in orbit has grown sharply with commercial satellite constellation expansion, and the debris field from anti-satellite missile tests has added thousands of fragments requiring continuous monitoring. Astronaut safety, spacecraft collision avoidance, and early warning against foreign satellite maneuvers all depend on the same underlying network.
The mesh architecture addresses a structural vulnerability in the current system. A network that can reroute data around damaged or jammed nodes is considerably more survivable than one that relies on fixed communication paths — a relevant consideration as China and Russia have both demonstrated the capability and willingness to target space assets.
Anduril’s expanding space portfolio
The SSN contract modification follows Anduril’s disclosure earlier this month that it will lead an industry team — including Impulse Space, Inversion Space, K2 Space, Sandia National Labs, and Voyager Technologies — on a Space Force space-based interceptor prototype under the Golden Dome missile defense initiative. That contract is part of a $3.2 billion OTA award distributed across 12 companies.
The two contracts together position Anduril across both the detection layer and the intercept layer of US space defense architecture — tracking threats with the upgraded SSN and developing hardware to defeat them through the SBI program. Whether that dual positioning was coordinated or coincidental, the combined scope represents a significant expansion beyond Anduril’s origins in autonomous surface and air systems.
Completion of the SSN mesh networking upgrade is scheduled for September 2027, ahead of the Golden Dome prototype timeline, which has no publicly disclosed delivery date.
