Flytrex has launched the Sky2, an octocopter capable of carrying nearly 9 pounds — enough for two large pizzas, sides, and drinks — marking the first commercial drone delivery platform purpose-built for full family meal orders rather than single-item drops.
The rollout launched April 23 at a single Little Caesars location in Wylie, Texas, roughly 30 miles outside Dallas. Customers within a four-mile radius can receive an order approximately four and a half minutes after it leaves the oven.
Why Eight Rotors Instead of Four
Most food delivery drones use quadcopter or hexacopter configurations. Flytrex’s decision to go with eight rotors on the Sky2 is a payload trade-off: more rotors mean more lift capacity without scaling to a larger airframe. The ceiling for most commercial drone delivery has sat around 5 pounds — enough for a burrito or a bag of fries, not a family dinner. The Sky2’s 9-pound capacity pushes past that constraint and into a meaningfully different order size.
Whether the octocopter configuration introduces maintenance or regulatory complexity compared to simpler four-rotor designs is a question the Wylie deployment will start to answer at scale.
A Crowded Market Getting More Competitive
Flytrex is not operating in a vacuum. Wing — Alphabet’s drone delivery subsidiary — is expanding its Walmart partnership to 270 locations by 2027, having already served parts of Atlanta and Dallas-Fort Worth. Zipline launched “Zipotle” with Chipotle in 2025. DoorDash and Wing announced Atlanta drone delivery earlier in April. Matternet began delivering Dave’s Hot Chicken across Northridge, California in late 2025.
Flytrex has its own momentum: it hit 100,000 food deliveries in August 2024 and counts Chick-fil-A, Jersey Mike’s, and El Pollo Loco among its restaurant partners, alongside a DoorDash integration and Uber investment from September 2025. The Little Caesars partnership adds a high-volume pizza chain with a franchise model that could scale the Wylie concept to additional locations quickly if the initial deployment performs.
McKinsey projects 1.5 billion drone deliveries annually in the US by 2035. The Sky2’s payload increase is a direct attempt to capture the larger average order value that sits between that projection and where drone delivery economics actually need to be to sustain the infrastructure investment behind it. Flytrex has said future Little Caesars locations are under consideration pending the Wylie results.
