Leonardo

Leonardo is an Italian aerospace and defence group listed on Borsa Italiana as LDO. Italy’s Ministry of Economy and Finance is its largest shareholder. The company produces helicopters, aircraft, electronics, radars, cyber systems and space products, as well as uncrewed platforms and payloads. It is a diversified prime contractor, so group financial figures must not be treated as drone-only revenue.

Key Products

  • AW149 - a medium military helicopter in production for multiple export customers including Poland and Egypt
  • Falco family - fixed-wing uncrewed aircraft systems for surveillance and reconnaissance. Product certifications and operational status vary by variant and customer.
  • PicoSAR - a compact airborne radar for small aircraft and UAS platforms
  • BriteCloud - an expendable active decoy for fast jets, developed with BAE Systems

Business and Funding

Leonardo reported first-quarter 2026 revenue of EUR4.4 billion, orders of EUR9.0 billion, EBITA of EUR281 million and free operating cash flow of negative EUR411 million. Its order backlog was about EUR57 billion at March 31, 2026. In July it reported strong first-half results and upgraded parts of its 2026 guidance; the profile records only the independently extracted first-quarter figures and treats later guidance as targets.

Why It Matters

Leonardo matters because it can combine airframes, payloads, radars and mission systems within European procurement programmes. Its uncrewed portfolio is relevant, but readers should not infer that a group order book represents demand for a particular UAS. The more useful question is whether Leonardo can convert its systems-integration position into certified, supported and exportable uncrewed capabilities alongside its established manned aerospace businesses.
