Red Cat Holdings will deliver 173 Black Widow small unmanned aerial systems to Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force under a contract awarded by the Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency.
Each system includes two Black Widow drones, a ground control station, and additional mission equipment configured for tactical intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. Local partners HAMA K.K. and ITOCHU Aviation will support in-country delivery, training, and maintenance.
Japan Is the Second Asia-Pacific Ally to Adopt the Black Widow
The contract follows a similar order from Australia, establishing a small but growing allied footprint for the platform across the Pacific. Red Cat has said future phases may include licensed production and expanded maintenance capabilities within Japan — a standard progression for allied defense procurement that signals longer-term industrial commitment rather than a one-time sale.
The Black Widow is Red Cat’s tactical ISR platform, built around secure communications and a compact field configuration suited for ground unit operations. It sits in the category of small, man-portable systems that allied militaries have been acquiring at scale since the Ukraine conflict demonstrated their battlefield utility.
Japan’s FY2026 procurement of 173 systems, each with two drones, represents a meaningful initial buy for a ground force just beginning to integrate sUAS at the unit level. Whether ATLA follows with additional orders under future fiscal years will determine whether this becomes a program of record or a limited capability demonstration.
